Progress Update 3-29-2011

Hey Guys!

Let's send a big thanks out to Sevini, Herb, Carole, and Randy for setting up a booth at the Knowing and Growing seminar this past Saturday. You guys were great! Thanks to Laurie for the new awesome logo!

Several members have taken lead roles for Finance, Communication, Education, and Infrastructure and everyone in the group is helping out where they can.

We're looking for creative financing options such as workshops, grants, corporate sponsorships, and donations. If you have an idea - let us know!

The new rendering is complete and it looks great. The butterfly garden, grape arbor, white picket fence, and landscaping is really going to make this place beautiful, not to mention the individual garden boxes. Thanks Tammi!

We've coordinated a visit to the Gardens is Havana for April 9th so that we can learn as much as we can about what it takes to create and maintain a community garden. Some of us in the neighborhood will probably ride together. So if your interested, let us know! (Really looking forward to this!)

Also, it looks like we are planning for a fall garden. Spring would be nice, but fall gives us plenty of time to finish planning and get to work!

Gardening is about enjoying the smell of things growing in the soil, getting dirty without feeling guilty, and generally taking the time to soak up a little peace and serenity.  ~Lindley Karstens, noproblemgarden.com

It's raining, it's pouring and my plants are growing!

I am really enjoying the rain this week. I think my plants have all grown a few inches and I have lots of little tomatoes, peppers, and strawberries popping up. To me, there are few things as rewarding as getting my hands dirty in the garden boxes and watch my vegetables and flowers grow. I have found that gardening is really quite peaceful and positive for me and my kids. Some days we simply sit by the garden checking on the plants, find worms (well, they do) and enjoy being outside. This is one of the reasons I am looking forward to our neighborhood getting a community garden. What a great way to visit with neighbors, learn from each other, and enjoy the fruits... or vegetables of our labor.

The Southwood Town Center bustling with activity?!...sounds nice...

To me, Spring is a time for renewal, warmth, and reveling in the great outdoors. Also, I look forward to seeing my neighbors in Southwood come outside and enjoy the beautiful amenities that our neighborhood has to offer such as the pool, green spaces, walking trails, workshops, gatherings, and the town center. I drove past the town center the other day and noticed the place where the CDD has given conditional approval for a Southwood Community Garden. I thought how great would it be to see a new amenity right across from the Town Center that would be a beautiful destination, a place of growth, and...activity! How cool would it be to see some more activity in the Southwood Town Center. How great would it be to grab a cup of coffee and wander around the garden looking at the beautiful plants and maybe relaxing on a bench, enjoying the weather. I was already looking forward to getting my hands dirty growing my own organic veggies and working alongside great people, but thinking of what this garden could do for our neighborhood really gives me something to work for!
